New York total-loss guide

Total Loss Appraisal and Valuation Review in New York

A total-loss offer should be tested against the vehicle and the market—not accepted simply because a valuation report produced a number.

Start with the insurer’s valuation report

Review the VIN decode, trim, drivetrain, factory equipment, mileage, condition ratings, comparable vehicles, adjustments, taxes and fees. A small error in several categories can compound into a meaningful valuation difference.

Build market evidence around the actual vehicle

Useful comparables should be reasonably similar in model, trim, equipment, mileage and market area. Asking prices are evidence to analyze, not automatic proof of value, so differences should be explained rather than ignored.

When an independent appraisal can help

An independent review can be useful when the carrier report contains mismatched comparables, unsupported deductions, missing equipment, questionable condition adjustments or a market result that does not reflect the vehicle.

Appraisal-clause disputes require the policy

If the policy contains an appraisal provision, the actual language controls the process. Obtain the complete applicable policy before relying on an online template or another carrier’s procedure.
